The statement „Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” expressed resurrected Christ to angel of the Minor Asia Church in Laodicea. This is the message for people who are His followers on the earth. He informs them where he is and what is doing about: He stands at a door asking to enter where His supporters are living. He addresses His followers in Laodicea. Resurrected Christ pleads to come in their communion as well as in their privacy. He wishes to abide with every man and to have the supper with him. He initiates his concern about man – He is not waiting for man’s idea to have supper with Christ. The supper, the dinner party means very close fellowship.
The artist – author of this painting perceives Jesus’ statement yet in another context – that Jesus demands to enter into man’s heart. It is expressed by the heart. The heart in the ancient world represented more than a body organ (pump), but it was figuration of the inward of human being. This area is not all right, though. Jesus told to his followers that „out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings...” (Matt 15, 19) In the heart of man there is to be place for Jesus. The soul cannot stay to be empty. Jesus said that if heart will continue to be empty, the unclean spirit will try to occupy it. This danger is symbolized by the serpent next to the heart. Man has to be careful and he has to listen knocking of Jesus sooner than he is endangered. When he is listening the knocking at the door he has to answer. When Jesus knocks, next step of chess depends on man as it is symbolized by chessboard in the field. The white king at chessboard is bleeding but he is not defeated. More likely he is sacrificed. It is adverting on Christ similarly as the knocking hand. And it gives the reason for claim of resurrected Christ to enter into the human heart – to save the man.
